Initiatives for SDGs
Objectives at OIST
As a "university rooted in the community and open to the world," OIST aims to contribute to the sustainability of the international community as a whole by exploring concrete solutions through education, research, and collaboration with the community, and by working with the community.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicate that a wide range of issues, such as conservation of the natural environment, improvement of people's lives, and the development of economic activities, are closely interrelated. Shimonoseki City University also emphasizes this mutuality and conducts educational, research, and social contribution activities across a variety of fields.
Through the strengthening of research activities and further promotion of international exchange, we aim to become an intellectual base that connects the region and the world by bringing together knowledge across fields and borders. In addition, by further enhancing the quality of education and actively returning research results to the local community, students, faculty and staff, and local residents work together to solve issues. I will continue to foster a place for learning and practice.
Through these initiatives, Shimonoseki City University will fulfill its social responsibilities as a university and proactively contribute to the realization of a sustainable society with a view to the future.

With the region
As a university of Shimonoseki City Univ., we are working together with local people, governments, and companies to address the issues of living and the city. We continue activities rooted in the community with the aim of creating a society where no one is left behind.
Connect with the world.
Taking advantage of its location as a gateway to East Asia, we are promoting exchange with overseas universities and study abroad programs. Through the experience of learning different cultures, we develop human resources who can play an active role in the international community.
・New learning
Faculty of Data Science, which was established in 2024, and Faculty of Nursing, which was opened in 2025, provide new learning to respond to changes in society. Developing the power needed in the future is also an important initiative for the SDGs.
From the daily campus
We are implementing sustainable initiatives in the daily life of the university, such as energy conservation, waste reduction, and greening. We will make the future better by accumulating small ideas.
