Lecturer: Professor Takahiro Kirihara Prof. Faculty of Economics In Germany, research use of fertilized eggs and early embryos has been prohibited by the "human dignity" clause of the Basic Law and the Embryo Protection Act. However, with the limited legalization of pre-implantation gene diagnostics (PGD) (2011) as a major turning point, and recently, with the emergence of limited acceptance of germline interventions by genome editing, there has been a growing argument that conventional restrictions should be eased. In this course, I would like to give an overview of this movement, point out unresolved issues such as the moral status of early embryos and concerns about social discrimination, and discuss the prospects for ethical discussions in Japan in the future.
