[Research theme]
Research on regional development of companies located in the Kanmon area

[Summary of Report]
In the Edo period, the Kanmon area flourished as a relay base on the westbound route (kitamae-bune) and a junction of various highways to Kyushu, and even after the Meiji period, it flourished as a key point of transportation along with the extension of railway lines and the launch of ferryboats. Many companies located in Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu's Kanmon areas have grown into nationwide companies along with their business development. While some of these companies still operate nationwide based in the Kanmon area, some companies have expanded into Tokyo and Osaka while positioning the Kanmon area as their founding location.
In this study, we examined the regional development of companies located in the Kanmon region, first of all, the process of building inter-regional division of labor relations associated with the business development of each company. Second, we examined the utilization of resources left in the region along with the development of corporate activities with reference to similar port cities.
